Gallipoli (Italy), located by the Ionian Sea on the west coast of the Salentina Peninsula, is also known as the "Ionian Pearl". The Old Town is built on a limestone island and linked to the mainland by a 16th C bridge. The walls and bastions surrounding the old town are believed to have been built in the 15th century to fend off pirate attacks, as the port was once part of an important trade route. Parga is a town and municipality located in the NW of Greece in the region of Epirus. It lies on the Ionian coast between the cities of Preveza and Igoumenitsa. Gythion is a port in the NW of the Laconian Gulf, the largest and most important town on the Mani Peninsula in southern Greece. It is well known as being the port for Sparta some 40 km away. Monemvasia is located on a small peninsula off the Peloponnesian east coast in the Greek prefecture of Laconia. It is actually a medieval fortress with a town next to it and is joined to the mainland by a 200 m narrow causeway. It looks as if it has literally jumped out of the Medieval Era.
